Entrance to Starfest

Summer is approaching fast and so is the second annual Julian Starfest! This year’s event features more nights and more vendors. Starting on Thursday, August 20th, you can camp and observe for three nights. Daytime activities will begin on Friday morning with the swap meet scheduled for Saturday morning the 22nd. The BIG raffle will be Saturday night at 7:00 PM. You must be present to win one of the fabulous prizes that we have received. We’ve also added a “Premium” observing site, in the old reservoir to the north of the winery. This “Premium” site is for the serious imager or observer who doesn’t want any white light pollution. Of course, the Premium site does come at added cost and is limited to 25 vehicles.
Guest speakers will be giving lectures on Friday evening and throughout the day on Saturday. We already have Craig Stark lined up to give us a wonderful talk on imaging, plus Scott Robert’s from Explore Scientific. Other speakers will be Dr. Paul Etzel, Dennis Mammana, and Jerry Schad, with more to come.
We’ve made arrangements for the local Lion’s Club to do a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, as well as provide lunch and dinner on Saturday as well. Any profit from the meals goes to the good causes the Lion’s support. Other food vendors will be on site for Friday and evenings during observing time.
The public outreach that was such a success last year, has been scaled back a bit, to just Saturday night, to give the serious observers more dark sky time. We will have more “light police” on site for those few annoying astronomers who just don’t understand that a laptop or that 30 LED red flashlight can cause problems.
Now here's the pitch and the reason for this article, we need help. We need volunteers to help keep this event a success. For a mere four hours of volunteer time, you can camp and get in for FREE! Yes, that’s three days of camping for only four hours of your time! You may be put on parking lot direction, admission booth, trash patrol, traffic direction, who knows, but we need your help. We also need help with the setup on Thursday the 20th, if you can arrive early. Please check out our web page, www.julianstarfest.com, and click on the “Volunteer” link at the top of the page for more information.
