Vintage Unitron 142 - 75mm x 1200mm f/16 w/drive
Probably late 60's to early 70's vintage.
Made in Japan.
"Passed, Japan Telescope Inspection Institute" sticker on focuser.
If any of my fellow Amarters wish to offer their Unitron dating identification expertise please do.
The condition is very good to excellent which the following will describe in reasonable detail.
75mm x 1200mm f/16 OTA - NO dents or dings with few scuffs and surface scratches. A few small white touch-ups are visible upon close inspection. The objective shows some water spots that were never removed. No scratches or chips of any kind on the air-spaced objective. The focuser has been cleaned and re-lubed and operates smoothly. It has the .965" compression style visual back (no prism diagonal). A 1.25" visual back is not included but can be added. The Cradle appears as new. The finder is original Unitron 8 x 30mm. The objective on the finder scope is excellent with push/pull eyepiece for focus. The double crosshairs are true and clean. The tube of the finder scope has no dents but has many chips to the white paint and would benefit from a recoat. The dew shield is in the same good condition as OTA, no dents but has some dulling spots in the white paint. The original plastic lens cover displaying the Unitron logo is damaged but can be salvaged with a little ingenuity.
Eyepieces - All original Unitron .965". Good condition. R25mm, K18mm, K12.5mm, SYM.ACH9mm and ORTHO 6mm.
Barlow - one Unitron Barlow and an additional 6 inch focus tube is included.
Sunscreen Set - includes the rod, shade screen and brackets but is missing the white sunscreen.
Mount - ah the mount, these things are remarkable. What a precision machine. All movements are buttery smooth as is expected with these outstanding rock solid mounts. I was surprised to find only few signs of wear - it is a beautiful work of art. This telescope has not been setup often. The motor drive is original and in good working condition.
The following are minor imperfections I found on the mount
- A piece of the plastic knob on the Dec slow motion rod has broken off. The metal rod is fine, it's just the plastic knob. It is certainly functional but the knob could be replaced or modified.
- The electric clock drive black mounting ring shows some dulling and chips to paint in spots.
- The Dec locking rod shows some brass through the nickel coating.
Hardwood Tripod - fine condition and super solid. Much of the hardware has been replaced with new Stainless Steel. Has three original black plastic hand tightening knobs. Most of the black paint is gone from the tripods metal tips. There are a few scuffs here and there on the wood.
Tripod Tray - fine condition. All three lock connections are fully functional and smooth. One top corner on the wood shows some minimal surface splitting that has since been expertly repaired.
The three wood cases are original and never refinished. I was going to refinish with blonde shellac but then thought the new owner would probably enjoy doing it.
Mount case - interior is in excellent condition. Very good condition exterior.
OTA case - interior is in excellent condition. Very good condition exterior.
Tripod case - could use some work. Both hasps are still there awaiting a new top lid.
A printed and CD copy of the 31 page instruction manual is included.
P.S. forgot to mention I rewired the motor drive to eliminate that slight cut in the wire near the top (see 3rd photo top row). Last photo shows restore.
Asking $1900 plus shipping.
This special instrument will be shipped in two boxes, one box for the mount and the other box for the OTA and tripod. I will pack the three wood cases with extreme care using plenty of cushioning as usual.
