I’m reluctantly selling my TEC 6 Maksutov Cassegrain. The scope has a quartz mirror and is #28, delivered in April 2003. It is a superb planetary, lunar, and double star performer. You’ll have to look far and wide for so much quality aperture in such a small package. Fit and finish, engineering details are superb throughout. This is the first TEC scope I’ve owned and I am extremely impressed…so much so that I’ve ordered a TEC 140. I can’t afford to keep 2 ota’s so close in aperture, so the TEC 6 has to go. Optics are excellent. There are a few dust specs on corrector plate, and some of the anodizing has come off the focus locking ring of the finder scope, which is made (I think) by Borg. Otherwise it’s in outstanding shape.
Some thoughts about the TEC 6:
-There is an internal cooling fan, powered by the “Celestron” battery pack shown in the photo. The fan circulates air within the ota and is whisper quiet. Vibration is minimal and the fan can be kept on at high power.
-Collimation is spot on, and it stays that way.
-Focusing is via a micrometer focuser. There is no mirror shift or flop. The focuser permits fine tuning the “sweet spot” with minimal effort or vibration.
-I use this scope with an AP/Zeiss/Baader binoviewer. It reaches focus even without the 1.25x Glasspath compensator installed in the binoviewer.
-The ota has provisions for mounting two finders. As shown in the photos, I sometimes use it with both an optical finder (included) and a TV Starbeam (not included). The TEC 6 finder holder is an ingenious arrangement that permits finder alignment with just two screws.
-As with every detail on the scope, Yuri has thought through the small things. The pre-tapped finder holes will accept either Tec’s proprietary finder mount or the standard AP finder holder, which you can see beneath my TV Starbeam in the photos.
-Also included is a machined aluminum dovetail plate by Tec that bolts to the mount base built into the underside of ota. This is a Vixen compatible dovetail bar, but if you’d prefer using AP dovetail plates, no problem. The hole pattern on the mount base will accept both AP and Losmandy plates.
My price for this setup is $2,400. I will give preference to a local buyer in the San Francisco Bay area. I live a few miles north of Berkeley. Shipping, if it comes to that, will be at buyer’s expense, but I would much prefer a local sale. The price includes ota, dew shield, power supply for fan, Tec finder holder and bracket, 8x50 optical finder (Borg?), and original documentation. I’ll miss the Tec 6’s lunar and planetary views. Its size allows for instant setup and it has been nothing but a pleasure to use.
