The tripod that came with my LXD-55 was almost laughable in it's flimsiness so I have modified my Meade Field Tripod for use with an LXD-55 mount. I designed a special LXD-55 plate to take place of the standard plate that was originally mounted to the Field Tripod. A friend used a CNC mill to make the plate for me from a 1.75" thick 7075 aluminum billet. In addition, I mounted the custom plate to the tripod legs using special shoulder bolts and precision shims. We then turned a custom tool-free lock nut/tensioner to simplify field assembly and retain all of the features and original components of the tripod. For transport and storage, the tripod still collapses as it did originally.
To secure your LXD-55 mount to this setup takes about 10 seconds in the field and requires no tools. When used with the LXD-55, this tripod is ROCK SOLID! A removable Sterrit bubble level was also incorporated into the plate for quick and easy leveling.
I am also including a custom, solid aluminum dovetail bar to take place of the cheap cast one Meade sends with the LXD-55. The dovetail plate slipped out of the vise while I was milling it so there are a few gouges in it but no one ever notices them when the scope is mounted.
I'll throw in the original tripod head too.
I'm moving up to a G-11 mount so I'm selling this unique setup for only $350.00 via PayPal (never a surcharge)including shipping CONUS.
The LXD-55 mount and OTA are NOT included.
