This is the sturdier D-type Vixen alt/az mount with counterweight. Why it’s no longer sold here is a mystery to me, given its design advantages. The mount holds scopes as large as the TMB 100/800 and TV140 securely and provides smooth slow motion control in both axes that make tracking objects at medium to high powers a real pleasure.

If you’re used to the nudge, vibrate, dampen, look a few seconds, lose the object, nudge, nudge routine with mounts like the Gibraltar, this baby will delight you. The Cloudy Nights review on it says it all.

There are some minor cosmetic blems of the sort you'd expect from normal use, but nothing that affects the mount's operation or is unsightly. The mount does not have the additional small counterweight as shown in the Cloudy Night review, but that won't make a difference in use since, as the reviewer noted, moving the extra weight makes no difference and the marvelous design works simply due to the mount's being under constant tension, thereby obviating balance problems. It works well with any lightweight telescope that has a GP dovetail (I didn’t get a dovetail with it though, so you’ll have to dig one up - easy enough to do).

Most users of alt-az mounts are used to the balance issue - to move the telescope smoothly it must be balanced perfectly on the mount head. With the Custom D mount, however, the built-in tension of its head eliminates balancing hassles. Slide your telescope or binos all the way forward or back on a dovetail and the mount moves just as smoothly, enabling you to just glide over to the object of your choice, lock down the tension knob, and start tracking your object with the slo-mo knobs.

Why am I selling it? Through a recent comedy of errors, I ended up with two. Proper packing, insurance and shipping will run me about $45.

I'm asking $315 shipped via insured Priority Mail in Conus. If picked up in the NY area, I will cut $45 out of my asking price.
