This is definitely a cut above the commercial 8" dobs. I had one of those, and it was alright, but I constructed this as an upgrade. The main areas I wanted to improve on were tracking smoothness, focuser smoothness, collimation, and ability to pack into a small vehicle.
Scope has Discovery premium Pyrex optics, which have given great views of Jupiter and Saturn when seeing permits. Star test looks good (similar inside and outside focus), although I am not an expert on that. All bearings are Ebony Star on teflon, and have proved very smooth (a little Armor All now and then will revive them). Focuser is a 2" JMI reverse crayford - works great - I will include a 2"-1.25" adapter. Three-vane spider by Protostar collimates easily and holds collimation well. Includes a Rigel Quickfinder. Upper cage is painted sonotube with plastic reinforcing inserts where the truss tubes bolt on. Truss tubes are wood, and each is marked at the top with a number in Sharpie pen to guide assembly. Mirror box and rocker are made from high-grade oak veneer plywood. Weighs 35 lbs. Has covers for primary and secondary mirrors.
The scope has a fan to blow across the mirror and includes a gel-cel battery for the fan. I stopped using the fan, because it didn't help the images (maybe due to open-structure design -- the scope has no light shroud, but I never felt it needed one). When I did use the fan, I put some resistors in series to slow it down, but a variable resistor would be better (I never got around to it). I can e-mail a picture that shows this.
Scope comes apart with 12 bolts. About 10 minutes to disassemble and 20 minutes to re-assemble.
Minor cosmetic flaws: few scuffs on the upper cage and extra holes in the truss tubes and one mirror box cross bracket (first tries weren't quite right).
