This is a VERY rare, possibly unique in public
hands, Questar telescope. It appears to
have standard 3.5" Questar optics combined with
two rotating wheels that introduce different
lenses and filters into the optical path. One
wheel has five positions marked: 320mm, 605mm,
1206mm, 1812mm, and 2416mm. The other wheel
contains one open position and four neutral
density (0.6, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0) filters. Both
wheels move easily with smooth detents. Focus is
adjusted with two knobs offering both coarse and
fine focus. Focusing is extremely smooth but
could use a little more friction to hold it in
place. I bought this item a year ago from a
camera dealer who had this to say: "When I
phoned the Questar factory and spoke with the
President, he acted rather surprised and asked
me quizzically 'How did you happen upon this
item? You are technically not supposed to have
this telescope!' He did not offer much additional
information on it except that it was made in VERY
small numbers for the US Government." He told me
that he bought it in 1995 from a Questar 'Rep'.
The optics are in like-new condition with no
cleaning marks, spots or fungus evident. The
front corrector appears multi-coated. Only light
scuff marks on the black anodized parts. Viewed
images are extremely sharp at all focal lengths.
Comes with a rotating T adaptor plus a smaller
rotating adaptor for ???. Has 1/4 - 20 tripod
mount, but is a little heavy for camera tripods.
I will include an Edmund T adapter for 1.25"
eyepieces. Also includes original fitted hard
case and sun / dew shield. Note: The
filters are NOT sufficient for solar viewing.
This is a jewel of a telescope - It really
belongs in a museum. Heartbreaking to sell,
but other projects beckon. Email for more
pictures or further information. $3950
includes 2nd Day UPS insured shipping.
